Netflix has transformed the 2017 video game Cuphead into a series, and the first trailer is… it’s a lot to take in. I feel like I just did three shots of espresso? But my body doesn’t know that yet? It’s just that my brain is screaming.
Cuphead, the popular game from Studio MDHR, involves two mugs—Cuphead and Mugman—fighting to pay off their debt to the devil. The game was widely praised for its visual style, which takes its cues from the golden age of animation. That style carries over into the zany show, which debuts on Netflix next month. The summary doesn’t explain much:
Based on the award-winning video game that smashed onto the scene with a gorgeous retro animation style, The Cuphead Show! is a character-driven comedy series following the unique misadventures of loveable, impulsive scamp Cuphead and his cautious but easily swayed brother Mugman. As the two scour their surreal homeworld of the Inkwell Isles in search of fun and adventure, they always have each other’s back. Unless there’s only one cookie left, in which case it’s every cup for himself. The Cuphead Show! combines nostalgic delights, side-splitting gags, and a healthy dose of the heebie jeebies—especially when a ridiculously weird nemesis, The Devil himself, arrives on the scene to toy with our heroes.
Game creators Chad and Jared Moldenhauer also created the series and serve as executive producers, so this is coming straight from the cup’s mouth, so to speak. The Cuphead Show! debuts on Netflix on February 18th.
